August 8th is the opening of the Beautiful Losers shop in New York at the IFC Center.
"Presented by NIKE SPORTSWEAR, the film chronicles the lives and creative process of artists including Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, Stephen Powers, Geoff McFetridge, Thomas Campbell and Ed Templeton, among others, whose DIY attitudes informed the aesthetics and ethos of their generation.
To further commemorate the film’s release, Nike’s Sportswear’s JESSE LEYVA has also created a series of 22 Beautiful Losers Dunks emblazoned with iconic stills from the movie using the company’s new high-resolution digital printing process. Says Aaron Rose of the project, “We went back to the documentary and pulled frame stills of what we felt were key moments in the narrative. We used these moments to tell the Beautiful Losers story using the shoes as a medium, with the end result being a collection of works of art.” Viewed together, the shoes reflect the overall narrative of the film, and after being exhibited at the NYC and LA “Make Something!” workshops, two sets of the shoes will be auctioned off with proceeds donated to the Children’s Aid Society." Via Supertouch.
As mentioned above, two sets of the shoes will be auctioned very soon. We cannot remember the last time we were as excited about a set of shoes - a true collectors piece.

Richard Sandrak aka "Little Hercules"

With the dramatic changes in our society's idea of body image, it's no surprise that this has leaked into the newer generations. One of such case is Richard Sandrak (aka Little Hercules, aka World's Strongest Boy). Sandrak, by the age of 6 was already pumping iron. By the age of 9 he benched 160 pounds. He filmed a movie with Hulk Hogan titled "Little Hercules 3-D" which should be coming out next year and he's training for "Amazon Kid" directed by Joey Travolta. Nobody can ignore this kid's dedication to his body.
Now, at the age of 16, Sandrak is still pushing his body to the limits and increasing his tolerance for a hard workout. You can go check out him out on his Site.

Sam Flores New Upper Playground Shoe

This Thursday, August 7th, marks the release of the Sam Flores adidas Originals sneaker for Upper Playground. This is the final installment of the four-part series and the first hi-top sneaker in the collection. Other artists involved in the project include Herbert Baglione, David Choe, and Aesop Rock.
Fifteen years after first arriving on the West Coast from New Mexico, Sam Flores, an art school evacuee and self-taught illustrator, has established his place in the modern art movement as a master of fine art and product design. His fine artwork carries a voice and vision that is instantly identifiable. Flores’ artistic quality is unpretentious and provocative, and demands consideration without categorization.
When asked about his vision for his adidas hi-top sneaker, Flores commented: “I simply wanted to make a colorful bright shoe that would go well with the warm weather. I made it blue, grey and pink so it can work for both genders. Plus it’s something you can wear to Miami and stay up for three days and still look fresh!”
Sam Flores has collaborated with Upper Playground on numerous projects. He is currently working on producing two new vinyl figures with the company including one for Upper Playground’s 10-year anniversary.
There are only 500 pairs of the Sam Flores sneaker available worldwide. Each pair retails for $150 and sizes range from men's size 4 to 13.5.
To get your hands on the Sam Flores adidas hi-top, the Upper Playground site or head to a UP retail store. The sneaker will go on sale online at 8 am PT on Thursday, August 7, 2008.

Issey Miyake Watches

A subdivision of the Miyake fashion empire, IMW puts out a wildly varied, sleekly industrial line of timepieces designed by four top-of-their-field men, each given creative control and maximum credit by the big Miyake. Spring begins minimal: the urethane/leather banded "Twelve" drops numbers in favor of a 12-sided black steel case, while "To" looks sculpted from a hunk of metal, and keeps the hour with hands notched into concentric discs (which makes it look like a lock, so beware of strangers bearing keys). More conceptual pieces include the motorsports-inspired "Trapezoid" (bold colorways, multi dial, raised angular case, and speed-tracking tachymeter bezel), and the edgeless "Ovo": water resistant up to 10 bars (roughly 300ft), its spherical case and luminous dial will attract smitten deep-sea creatures out to win your hand in marriage.
Many styles fall in between, like the rectangular, dual-dialed "Vakio", or the "Insetto", whose case, head, and stem are modeled after the legs, head, and antennae of an insect -- but still sharp enough that you'll stand out from your fellow drones.
Go check the line out on their Site.

Complex x N.E.R.D. x Kaws Update
You've already heard about the upcoming Complex issue featuring N.E.R.D and Lupe Fiasco. Here are a few more details on the issue, images from inside spreads designed by Kaws as well as some nice video interviews. Kaws designed the N.E.R.D story and artist Reas designed the Lupe Fiasco Story.
As much as we love the work of Kaws, we do not understand why this comes so short after his work on iD Magazine. Even though his work for iD was on another level, we still think that a bit more time in between would not have hurt anybody.
